Women have made significant strides in political and public life, but there is still much work to be done to achieve true gender equality and diversity. That’s why WEN Wales is hosting a one-day event in partnership with Elect Her, “We Belong Here: Women’s Takeover of the Senedd,” to connect, mobilise, celebrate achievements, and discuss the importance of representation and women in leadership.

The Senedd is an ideal location for the event as it is a symbolic representation of Welsh democracy, decision-making, and power. With the support of the Llywydd in holding this event at the Senedd, it sends a message that women’s voices are integral to the democratic process and that they are not to be ignored or marginalised.

We Belong Here: Women’s Takeover of the Senedd” will bring women from all over Wales together to connect, mobilise, and celebrate their achievements. It will provide an opportunity for women to share their experiences, exchange ideas, and build relationships with one another. Through this gathering, women will be able to find support, inspiration, and encouragement from their peers, which is essential for promoting gender equality and diversity. Come the 2026 Senedd elections and 2027 Local Government elections, we want to see more women in leadership and representation roles in Welsh politics, especially from Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority backgrounds, Disabled women, LGBTQ+ women, and women with other protected characteristics.

One of the main goals of this event is to share experiences and knowledge from women already in the Senedd or in local government. Learning from the lived experience of the women already in political roles and how they have navigated their journey in Welsh politics thus far will help other women start or continue their journeys. Research has shown that having equal and diverse representation is important for the progress of society. It promotes better decision-making, encourages innovation, and ensures that the needs and perspectives of all members of society are considered. By having more women in leadership roles, we can create a more equitable and just society.

Additionally, celebrating the achievements of women is essential for promoting gender equality. Too often, women’s contributions to society are overlooked or undervalued. By highlighting their achievements and successes, we can create a more positive and empowering narrative around women and their capabilities.

The event will include interactive workshops. There will be two rounds, the first focusing on supporting women at each stage of their political journey. For example, they will range from ‘Getting Started: How does Wales’ democracy impact my life?’ to ‘Can I become an MS and how do I become one?’  The second round of workshops will enable women with similar identities and lived experiences to share support, resources and advice. For example, these workshops may include ‘Disabled women in politics.’ That way women interested in a political role can gain support from those already doing it.

Hosting a one-day event like “We Belong Here: Women’s Takeover of the Senedd” is vital for promoting gender equality, empowering women, and creating a more equitable and just society. By bringing women together, celebrating their achievements, and discussing the importance of having women in political roles, we can create a more inclusive and equitable future for all.

What are you waiting for? Register your interest here! Please join us on Saturday the 21st of October 2023 at the Senedd to celebrate, mobilise, connect, and build a stronger community of women in Wales. Promote equal and diverse representation in Welsh politics, we all belong here.
