Equal Power Equal Voice in Westminster

Friday May 19th, 2023

On Tuesday 16th May mentees from the Equal Power Equal Voice mentoring programme benefitted from a trip to the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. This was a valuable opportunity for empowerment and exchanging insight as this group continue their journeys in public and political life.

It was incredibly powerful to hear stories from mentees sharing their lived experience, as well as hearing from MPs and peers about their own experiences in politics. Mentees offered insight into barriers and accessibility issues in the corridors of power in an afternoon session hosted by Jessica Morden MP and the EPEV team, with a Q&A and networking session following the speakers.

In the morning mentees were escorted on a guided tour, beginning in the memorable Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster, before visiting the Central Lobby, the division lobbies, and the House of Lords.

Equal Power Equal Voice (EPEV) is a partnership between Women’s Equality Network (WEN) Wales, Stonewall Cymru, Disability Wales, and Ethnic Minorities & Youth Support Team (EYST) Wales. It is a mentoring programme aiming to increase diversity of representation in public and political life in Wales, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and Welsh Government. The programme includes a mixture of one-to-one mentoring, training sessions, peer networking, and trips like these to seats of power including the Senedd. The programme will soon be recruiting mentees and mentors for the next cohort and you could be involved!
