Hester Mackenzie
Hester Millicent Mackenzie was normal mistress at the University College of South Wales & Monmouthshire, an institution with an enlightened policy for its times in its approach to the recruitment and retention of female students and staff. Hughes made history when she was appointed a professor of education for women in 1910, making her the first female professor in Wales. She also co-founded the Cardiff and District Women’s Suffrage Society and in 1918 stood as Labour Party candidate in the parliamentary elections, being the only female candidate to do so in Wales.
