WEN Wales will celebrate International Women’s Day 2020 at four events throughout Wales.

From workshops to women activists combating plastic pollution there is something for everyone so please put these dates in your diary now!

Our IWD 2020 toolkit is now available.  From celebrating your own personal inspirational woman, to making a pledge or organising a panel discussion, this toolkit can help you get involved.

We’ve got two options – for those with little time and for those who want to do more.

Zine Workshop

Inspired by Cranogwen (Sarah Jane Rees), join poet, artist and publisher Nicky Arscott in exploring self-expression through radical zine culture and get hands on creating your very own DIY zine. Cranogwen became the first woman to win a poetry prize at the National Eisteddfod and was Editor of Y Frythones, a platform for Welsh bluestockings and proto-suffragettes”.
Nicky is Founder of Mother Mary Press , an independent comic’s publisher and a Director of Ennyn CIC – promoting art and creativity in schools and communities.

From Trash to Cash: An interactive workshop transforming waste plastic and carbon dioxide into useful products

Dr Jennifer Rudd , Recycling Carbon & Martin Paley, Precious Fantastic Lancaster will host a live interactive presentation and workshop around reducing our increasing plastic waste by transforming old objects into something new live on stage. They’ll also tackle something much harder, how do we reduce our carbon emissions? Come and find out!

Citizen Science: stemming the tide of plastic pollution – Lauren Eyles

Lauren Eyles will reflect on over 10 year’s commitment to studying the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans and coastal landscape. As Gillian Burke from BBC Springwatch has said:

“We are only just waking up to the vital role our oceans play in stabilising our climate and supporting all life on earth. Lauren is a brilliant and passionate advocate who is helping to spread this message and to get us all falling in love with our blue planet. ”
Lauren is a regular contributor on national television including appearances on Blue Planet UK, BBC Coast, Blue Peter, Newsround, Springwatch and Countryfile.

Women Activists in Science: Panel Discussion

Dr Kamila Hawthorne , one of WEN Wales’ 100WelshWomen and Head of Graduate Entry Medicine, Swansea University will host a panel discussion with Lauren Eyles , Marine Biologist and ocean conservationist; Alice Gray , STEMinist and science writer; Dr Jennifer Rudd , Research Associate at ESRI, Swansea University; and a short video contribution by Emily Penn , Director of Exxpedition, international advocate for clean oceans, and the youngest and only female recipient of the Yachtmaster of the Year award.

Championing remarkable women in health and innovation

Meet the game changer: Dr Elin Haf Davies (Aparito)

Dr Elin Haf Davies , has twenty years of clinical experience working to develop new drug treatments for rare childhood diseases. She will talk about what led her to become CEO of Aparito – a digital health company developing wearable technology for patients with rare diseases. Elin is also an accomplished Ocean Adventurer, having rowed across the Atlantic (the first woman from Wales to do so) and Indian Oceans, and sailing across the Pacific and Atlantic – spending a total of 204 days at sea. A successful author and inspirational speaker, she will share what it takes to fulfil these challenges and where she draws her motivation from.

Women Innovators: Panel Discussion

A panel session will follow, featuring pioneering women at the forefront of innovations in health and technology including Yasmine Boudiaf , Creative Technologist and founder of Serious Datum, and chaired by Dr Olwen Williams OBE , Consultant Physician and President of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV.
